LONDON (UK) – UEFA, which is the governing body of European soccer, said it was confident that Real Madrid’s Champions League match with Manchester City will go ahead as planned next week although one of the players of the Spanish club has tested positive for the virus.
On Tuesday, Real Madrid said that its forward Mariano Diaz had tested positive and was unlikely to take part in the Aug. 8 tie at the Etihad Stadium.
“UEFA is in contact with the club and monitoring both the situation and decisions of the relevant Spanish authorities,” UEFA told British media.
“We are confident that this case will not affect the regular staging of the match in question.”
From the first leg of their last-16 tie before the match was suspended in March, Real trail Manchester City 2-1.
Spain is witnessing a spike in coronavirus cases with thousands of infections being reported on a daily basis in the past week.
