BEIRUT (LEBANON) – Law enforcement authorities in Lebanon have arrested 16 people in connection with the probe into the blast at a warehouse in Beirut port, said state news agency NNA on Thursday. According to a source, the general manager of the port is among those detained.
Quoting Judge Fadi Akiki of the military court, the NNA said the authorities had so far interrogated more than 18 port and customs officials as well as those in charge of maintaining the warehouse.
“Sixteen people have been taken into custody as part of the investigation,” NNA quoted Akiki as saying.
Local media said Beirut Port General Manager Hassan Koraytem was among those arrested. The Lebanese central bank said it had frozen the accounts of seven people, including Koraytem, and the head of Lebanese customs.
