THE HAGUE (THE NETHERLANDS) – Lawyers representing family members of the victims of the Malaysian airlines aircraft which was shot down in 2014 said on Monday they will seek damages from the four suspects under trial in the Netherlands.
Three Russians and a Ukrainian are facing trial for murder and shooting down the aircraft over Ukraine killing all 298 people onboard.
Only one of them is being represented during the trial and the others are at large.
As many as 316 relatives of those who died have come forward seeking damages and 76 plan to use the right to speak during the trial, said Peter Langstraat, who represents 450 family members.
The claims are yet to be filed as the lawyers have asked the court to come out with a ruling deciding whether Dutch or Ukrainian law should be applied.
The aircraft was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was downed by a missile fired from a territory held by pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
