TOKYO (JAPAN) – Japan is planning to invite Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd or other global chipmakers for the setting up of an advanced chip manufacturing plant in a joint effort with domestic chip equipment suppliers, according to the Yomiuri daily reported on Sunday.
The Japanese government is expecting to channel the expertise of global chipmakers to bolster the lagging domestic chip industry. Advanced chip technologies have become the talking point in national security issues, according to Yomiuri.
A TSMC spokesperson denied there was no such plan at the moment, however, it was added that it would not cancel anything out in the future. The Japanese industry ministry did not answer calls.
TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, in May introduced plans for a $12 billion plant in the US in an apparent win for the Trump administration’s efforts, as it grappled with global technology supply chains back from China.
