ROME (ITALY) – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, looking to salvage his government after a junior partner left the coalition, highlighted on Monday how he dealt with both the coronavirus emergency and the knock-on economic crisis.
Addressing the lower house of parliament, Conte said there was “no plausible justification” for Renzi’s decision. He also cautioned that the political turmoil posed serious threat of inducing serious damage on Italy during one of the most critical moments in modern history.
Conte faces a do-or-die vote in the lower house on Monday, with a second vote scheduled for the upper house Senate on Tuesday.
Attention is mainly laid on the 321-seat Senate, where Conte looks certain to fall behind, with regard to getting an absolute majority after his efforts to persuade centrists in opposition ranks to swift to his side seem to have failed.
