MILAN (FRANCE) – Italy has given the nod for the formation of a new firm to lodge the assets of troubled airline. This comes as the government is moving ahead with its plan to nationalise the carrier.
The plan was facing delay because of political infighting. Now it needs the approval of the European Commission.
The ministers handling economy, industry, transport and labour inked the decree setting up the company late on Friday.
“Italy’s new flagship carrier was born today,” said Transport Minister Paola De Micheli.
Alitalia had to go through 11 years of difficult private management and three botched restructuring bids and problems aggravated by the pandemic crisis.
