Medical workers in central China’s Wuhan City, the worst-hit Chinese city by COVID-19, have been working around the clock to take care of critical patients using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines.
ECMO machines are usually used to provide prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to patients whose heart and lungs are in bad condition.
Patients on the machine require a well-oiled team to take care of them 24 hours a day. All the equipment attached to the patients’ bodies will also make performing other medical tests much more difficult than usual.
At Wuhan’s Tongji Hospital, ICU medics have been using EMCO machines to sustain the life of critical COVID-19 patient Qin.
