Hollywood star Depp sues UK tabloid over ‘wife beater’ claims
LONDON (UK) – Hollywood star Johnny Depp has initiated legal action against a British tabloid on Tuesday. The case is likely to go deep into the private lives of the star, his ex-wife actress Amber Heard and other celebrities.
The actor of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series fame is suing the Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, and executive editor, Dan Wootton, for libel over an article Wootton penned in 2018 calling him a “wife beater”.
The case is slated to be heard at London’s High Court and will last for three weeks. Both actors are likely to provide evidence.
Depp and Heard met on the set of the 2011 movie “The Rum Diary” and married in February 2015. However, she moved the court for divorce after 15 months and obtained a restraining order against Depp. Heard accused him of physical abuse, though the actor denies it.
They divorced in 2017 when the restraining order was quashed. Depp consented to pay a settlement of $7 million.
