BERLIN (GERMANY) – Police in Germany searched more than 40 houses and businesses in five states on Wednesday as part of a probe into foreign workers being illegally brought to the country to work in the meat packaging sector.
Police are seeking to interrogate more than 80 workers, mostly from non-EU Eastern European states such as Ukraine and Belarus.
Two firms are suspected to have brought the workers illegally to work in the meat packing industry and there are 10 main suspects, said a police spokesman.
The meat packaging industry has been criticised for sub-contracting workers from Eastern Europe and providing unhealthy accommodation, increasing the risk of coronavirus outbreaks.
