Explosion rocks Mogadishu port as suicide bomber rams vehicle into checkpoint
MOGADISHU (SOMALIA) – Mogadishu port was rocked by an explosion on Saturday morning as a suicide car bomber rammed a checkpoint, said witnesses. The police are yet to provide details on casualties.
“Metal debris fell all over us inside the port and we heard gunfire,” said a port worker. “Security forces have surrounded the area.”
Another witness Mohammed Ali, a shopkeeper, said the blast caused tremors. According to a nurse at the city’s Madina hospital, five injured people were treated there.
Ever since local warlords overthrew authoritarian rulers Siad Barre in 1991, the country has been rocked by gang feuds.
From 2008, al Shabaab Islamist militant group has been waging war against the central government to establish its own rule based on Sharia law.
