BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) – The European Parliament has made its stand clear about its position on the European Union’s climate law. It extended its support for a 2030 target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% and by going against 1990 levels, according to vote results released on Thursday.
The Parliament’s position has been confirmed with a vote on a landmark law that makes the EU’s climate targets legally binding.
Parliament must comply with the final law with the EU’s 27 member countries. On the other hand, lawmakers would try to put pressure countries so as to not bring the negotiations to a cut in emissions of less than 55%.
The EU’s current 2030 target is a 40% emissions cut.
