Di Francesco to replace Zenga as Cagliari coach
ROME (ITALY) – Former Sassuolo, AS Roma and Sampdoria head Eusebio Di Francesco has been roped in by Serie A club Cagliari as its coach after deciding not to extend the contract with Walter Zenga.
“An expert and well-prepared coach, capable of giving a precise identity to his teams, Di Francesco will now put all his professionalism and skills at Cagliari’s disposal to contribute to the growth of the club,” said the club in a statement.
Zenga, former goalkeeper of Italy, was appointed in March but had to wait for three months as Serie A was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When he was in charge, the 13 games resulted in three wins, four draws and six routs as Cagliari came14th.
Di Francesco’s reputation grew during his stint with Sassuolo, helping them into the Serie A for the first time in the club’s history in 2013.
In 2017, he joined AS Roma and had a stellar first season, helping them win the third place and find a place in the Champions League semi-finals.
But the following season was not too impressive and he was sacked in March last year.
