LONDON (UK) – The coronavirus death toll in the UK might, in fact, be 15% higher than the daily statistics so far, according to data which include community deaths.
The Office for National Statistics revealed that 6,235 people in England and Wales died by April 3 with COVID-19 mentions on their death certificates.
“When looking at data for England, this is 15% higher than the NHS numbers as they include all mentions of COVID-19 on the death certificate, including suspected COVID-19, as well as deaths in the community.”
– Nick Stripe, ONS Statistician
Unlike the daily data which the government publishes which only show the coronavirus deaths in hospitals, these figures include community deaths, in places like nursing homes.
In London, almost half (46.6%) the deaths registered in Week 14, mentioned COVID-19.
