MOSCOW (World) – Russia’s death toll from coronavirus rose to 313, with an overnight increase of 40, with a new record daily jump in new cases.
Russian authorities reported 4,785 new cases in the last 24 hours, making the total number 36,793.
Moscow is the epicentre of Russia’s coronavirus outbreak and the first region in the country to introduce a lockdown. Moscow recorded 2,649 new cases with 21 new deaths.
Coronavirus infections rose sharply this month, but there still seems to be far fewer infections than many western European countries in the early stages of the outbreak.
Russian health authorities are not carrying out mass testing. Private testing results in Moscow among asymptomatic people suggest that the virus has penetrated deeply into its population than what is apparent from official data.
