BEIJING (Technology) – On Friday, China’s ride-hailing company Didi Chuxing said that it would recommence its evening Hitch service in a few cities, with better safety features and more efficient driver and passenger verification.
Drivers and passengers meeting the requirements can use the service from 20:00 to 23:00. This move comes after coronavirus battered ride-hailing service demand in China.
Didi, backed by Japan’s SoftBank, launched delivery services in 21 Chinese cities this month. This move is aimed at providing its drivers with more income.
In November, Didi relaunched Hitch after it suspended the service in 2018 after a female passenger’s murder by her driver.
The case hit the Chinese ride-hailing service’s image at a time when it has been trying to expand overseas. Didi wants to compete with foreign rivals like Uber. The move led the company to pledge it would prioritize safety over growth.
