Bloodbath at Mexico drug rehab centre, 24 dead
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – As many as 24 people were shot dead by gunment at a drug rehabilitation centre in Irapuato in Mexico, said police on Wednesday.
According to police officials, unidentified gunmen also wounded seven.
Photos shared by police reveal 11 bodies lying in a pool of blood in one room.
Three of the injured are in a critical condition, said police.
Videos on social media showed ambulances rushing to the site and relatives of the victims on the street.
Carlos Zamarripa, attorney general of Guanajuato, said a special team has been deputed to carry out an investigation. Governor Diego Sinhue demanded a joint effort by state and federal authorities to deal with such attacks. .
The rehab centre attack is one of the worst killings in the country ever since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador assumed charge, promising to bring down violence.
The carmaking hub of Guanajuato is one of the epicentres of violence in the country. It has been scarred by turf war between Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Gunmen killed 10 at another rehab centre in Irapuato on June 6.
