SYDNEY (AUSTRALIA) – Victoria, the second most populous state of Australia, recorded as many as 13 new coronavirus fatalities over the past 24 hours, said authorities. For the second straight day, the new infections remained below 200.
More than 80% of Australia’s COVID-19 fatalities because of a second wave of infections are linked to Victoria and the country has steered clear of the high number of casualties witnessed in other countries. It has recorded 24,500 infections and 485 deaths.
“It’s great to see two days in a row under 200, certainly we are trending down,” said Victoria Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton. “The best way to safeguard against a third wave is to bring that number down to the lowest feasible, possible level.”
Victoria recorded 182 new daily infections, which are down from more than 700 two weeks ago.
Victorian premier Daniel Andrews said he was hopeful that the tough curbs imposed in the state were showing results.
“It’s difficult, it’s painful, I know, but if we can just stay the course then we will get to the other side of this. Then we’ll be able to open up,” he said.
