OTTAWA (World) – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is banning military-grade assault weapons’ sale in the aftermath of Canada’s deadliest mass shooting two weeks ago.
“These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada.”
– Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister
Trudeau previously mentioned that a ban was in the works prior to the most recent mass shooting in Nova Scotia. In the shooting, a gunman armed with weapons like an assault rifle killed 22 people.
Trudeau also mentioned Montreal’s 1989 Ecole Polytechnique shooting where a man killed 14 women and himself due to radical anti-feminist sentiments.
The ban includes the buying, selling, transportation, importing or using the designated weapons and shall be implemented effective immediately by changing government regulations.
Current weapon owners have two years to dispose of them, and Trudeau stated that the government will later bring in legislation to provide “fair compensation.”
