Amazon.com plans on giving more data on goods which are counterfeit to law enforcement in an effort to crackdown fakes listed on its sites.
Amazon is under public scrutiny on its counterfeit and alleged unsafe products policing. Top labels like Apple and Nike have been frustrated by the fakes forcing their withdrawal from Amazon sales.
In the past, Amazon handed over information regarding counterfeit peddlers to authorities only when they believed that they had enough information to catch the culprit. However, now, Amazon wants to report the peddler merchant to federal authorities in Europe and the U.S. as soon as a counterfeit sale is conducted. This shall increase the volume and frequency of law enforcement reporting.
It cannot be established why this new program was not implemented so far. In 2018, Amazon made a deal with Apple to get rid of products not authorised by Cupertino. Several peddlers have been sued for fakes and the implementation of a counterfeit removal tool.
Amazon has been in talks with governmental authorities and similar organisations to elaborate an updated strategy for counterfeit reporting and how the company can advance with their enforcement efforts.
Amazon shall report the name of the merchant, company, products and their contact information to the authorities after confirmation that the business was selling fakes. This will close the account of the seller.
