SINGAPORE CITY (SINGAPORE) – The city state’s top court on Wednesday imposed a fine of S$15,000 (8,422 pounds) on the prime minister’s nephew after he was found guilty of contempt of court.
In a private Facebook post in 2017, Li Shengwu said the Singapore government was “very litigious and has a pliant court system”. Earlier this year, he said he would not participate in the proceedings against him.
The Facebook post came amid a public feud among the children of Lee Kuan Yew, who is the founder of the modern state of Singapore and they include prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, and Li’s father, Lee Hsien Yang.
“Apparently the court has rendered judgement on my case today … I disagree with the judgement,” Li posted on Facebook.
If Li, who resides in the US, fails to pay the fine, he will have to remain behind bars for a week, said Justice Kannan Ramesh.
