BANGKOK (THAILAND) – A senior Thai official said on Wednesday that the country will extend the state of emergency until the end of August and the security measures introduced to curb the spread of coronavirus will remain.
This comes after two months of zero local transmission and members of the public raising questions about the need for an emergency.
“It is still necessary to have the decree because we are opening up the country for more business meetings and tourism to stimulate the economy,” said Somsak Roongsita, secretary-general of the National Security Council. He said doctors had requested for the emergency to remain.
The emergency was extended after a political protest took place during the weekend defying the ban on gatherings.
