LONDON – On Thursday, a prayer leader was stabbed in a mosque in London and the assailant was arrested for attempted murder, according to police and mosque officials.
The prayer leader who was stabbed was in his 70s. The attacker was apprehended by worshippers till police arrived at the scene and arrested him.
“The muezzin did not sustain any life-threatening injuries but was seriously injured and is being treated at the hospital. A 29-year-old man, who is believed to have been attending prayers, was arrested inside the mosque on suspicion of attempted murder.”
The city Metropolitan Police said that the incident didn’t seem terrorism-related.
Photos on Twitter showed police officers holding a man restrained in the mosque’s prayer hall and leading him away.
100 worshippers were already in the mosque hall at the attack time and 20 people seemed to jump the assailant.
Victims claimed they heard screaming and saw the blood not long after.
The victim was stabbed on his shoulder by a man who has been attending the mosque for over six months before the gruesome incident which took place on Thursday.
British PM Boris Johnson was deeply saddened to hear of the attack and believes that an awful incident of the sort should not happen especially in a place of worship.
