BRASILIA- On Monday, the Ministry of Justice in Brazil fined Facebook Inc an amount of 6.6 million reais for improper sharing of user data.
According to the department of consumer protection, the developers of the “thisisyourdigitallife” App received data of 443,000 Facebook users improperly. This data was reportedly being shared for “questionable” purposes.
Facebook is evaluating legal options pertaining to this case, according to an emailed statement.
The company claims to focus on protecting the privacy of its users and claims to have made changes restricting App developers’ access to information.
Brazil’s ministry said that Facebook failed to provide adequate information to its users about the default privacy settings especially those pertaining to data regarding “friends” and “friends of friends”.
The investigation was launched by the ministry in 2018 following media reports regarding data misuse by Cambridge Analytica.
The decision can be appealed over the next 10 days by Facebook. The fine must be paid within a period of 30 days.
