Foreign Secretary David Cameron met with former President Donald Trump in Florida before proceeding to Washington DC for discussions.
Lord Cameron is currently in the US for talks with senior government officials regarding the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
It is a common practice for foreign secretaries to engage with opposition candidates during their visits abroad.
Previously, Lord Cameron has voiced criticisms of Mr. Trump, who is expected to run for the Republican Party in the upcoming US election.
During Lord Cameron’s trip to the US, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office announced that he will hold discussions with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken regarding backing for Ukraine and efforts to establish stability in the Middle East.
Republican lawmakers have been blocking a proposed $60 billion (£47 billion) military aid package for Ukraine for several months.
Mr. Trump and his supporters within the party oppose the US aid package for Ukraine.
David Cameron has been persistently urging Republicans to approve the aid package, which has particularly provoked Republican congresswoman and Trump loyalist Marjorie Taylor-Greene, who bluntly told the foreign secretary to “kiss my ass.”
Her response came after Lord Cameron penned an article warning the US against demonstrating “the weakness displayed against Hitler in the 1930s.”
During his forthcoming discussions with Mr. Blinken, Lord Cameron also plans to raise the deaths of three British men working for the aid organization World Central Kitchen in Gaza.
Back in 2015, during his tenure as prime minister, Lord Cameron labeled Mr. Trump’s proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the US as “divisive, stupid, and wrong.”
In his 2019 memoirs, Lord Cameron further expressed his dismay at the possibility of Mr. Trump winning an election, attributing it to his “protectionist, xenophobic, misogynistic interventions.”
