The security issue came to light thanks to diligent researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. They uncovered a software flaw that was actively being exploited to deploy commercial spyware known as Pegasus. Developed and sold by the Israeli company NSO Group, Pegasus is a sophisticated and expensive tool typically used to target dissidents, journalists, and political opponents. While this revelation may not directly affect the average user. Moreover, it highlights the critical importance of keeping device software up to date.

Citizen Lab, in response to this discovery, strongly advises all iPhone and iPad users to “immediately” update their devices to protect against potential security threats.

To install this vital security update, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select “General” from the list of options.
  3. Next, tap on “Software Update.”
  4. You should see the iOS 16.6.1 software update listed; tap it to begin the installation.
If you do not see the update immediately, here’s what you should do:
  1. Return to the General page within the Settings app.
  2. Tap “About” to check your current iOS version number.
  3. If your iOS version is already 16.6.1, you have the update installed and are protected.
  4. If your device is still running iOS 16.6 or an earlier version, repeat the above steps to search for the update.
  5. In case you still cannot locate the update, consider restarting your phone.
  6. If the update remains elusive, ensure you have a stable internet connection and then wait briefly before attempting the update once more.

This security update underscores the ongoing commitment of Apple to safeguarding the privacy and security of its users. Timely updates are crucial in preventing potential threats and vulnerabilities, making it imperative for all iPhone and iPad owners to act swiftly in securing their devices. Your digital safety is in your hands, and Apple is here to help you protect it.
