Indian Parliament to Hold Debate on No-Confidence Motion Against PM Modi’s Government

No-Confidence Motion Against PM Modi's Government

India’s parliament is poised to engage in a significant debate centred around a no-confidence motion that opposition parties have brought against Narendra Modi’s government. The discussion is scheduled to unfold in the coming days. It will provide a platform for opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of the Congress Party to initiate the debate on behalf of the opposing factions.

Lawmakers are set to cast their votes on the no-confidence motion on Thursday. A culmination of the extensive debate that is expected to ensue. Despite the motion’s presence, the outcome seems predetermined as PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its associated allies maintain a dominant majority within the parliament.

Focusing on Ongoing Ethnic Clashes

While the no-confidence motion itself is unlikely to result in the downfall of PM Modi’s government. Opposition leaders are eager to utilize the parliamentary platform to address pressing issues, specifically the ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur state. The debate is anticipated to pressure PM Modi into addressing the violence occurring within Manipur.

The current parliamentary session, which commenced on July 20, has been marked by disruptions and protests spearheaded by opposition leaders. These leaders have been vehemently demanding PM Modi’s direct engagement in addressing the violent conflicts unfolding in Manipur. Since early May, ethnic clashes between the Meitei majority group and the tribal Kuki minority have claimed over 150 lives. The violence led to the displacement of tens of thousands.

Federal Home Minister Amit Shah has indicated the government’s willingness to discuss the Manipur issue. But he has also accused the opposition of evading constructive discourse.

This isn’t the first time Prime Minister Modi’s government has faced a no-confidence motion. The current administration experienced a similar scenario in 2018 when a motion was brought forward regarding the grant of special category status to Andhra Pradesh state. After a gruelling 12-hour debate, the motion was ultimately defeated.

The impending no-confidence debate presents an opportunity for the newly established opposition alliance named INDIA. Consisting of 26 political parties, to showcase their unity and solidarity. Formed in July, this alliance has its sights set on challenging Prime Minister Modi’s BJP in the forthcoming general election, slated for next year.
