The UK is currently experiencing the first Met Office-named storm of the year, known as Storm Antoni. Forecasters have issued warnings about “unseasonably” strong winds that could pose a danger to life. Additionally, the Storm Antoni started late on Friday. It is expected to continue into Saturday. This will bring heavy rain and strong winds.

The Met Office has issued two amber weather warnings for wind in west Wales and parts of southwest England. Furthermore, Northern Ireland is likely to experience some of the heaviest rainfall, with a yellow warning for rain in place for most of the region. The yellow warning for wind is also in effect for parts of south-west England, including Plymouth, Bristol, and Bath.

The Met Office has warned that gusts of up to 65mph may batter large stretches of the UK‘s coastline. In addition, the Met Office has issued amber wind warnings for west Wales and parts of southwest England.

The storm could pose “injuries and danger to life from flying debris,” . Notably, Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Willington stated that the storm would bring “potentially disruptive” weather as it moves from west to east. Forecasters expect Northern Ireland to receive some of the highest rainfall, with 40-60mm falling in some areas and 20-30mm more widely, potentially leading to flooding and travel disruption.

RAC’s Rod Dennis advised drivers to be cautious in these “atrocious” conditions, suggesting slowing down significantly to stay safe and avoiding exposed moorland and coastal routes until the storm passes. He also issued a warning to drivers towing caravans and trailers to be particularly careful and ensure proper security of any roof boxes and bikes.
