Prosecutors reported that authorities raided 15 properties of climate activists across Germany on Wednesday. And confiscated assets as part of an investigation into the financing of protests by the environmental activist group Last Generation.
Seven individuals, ranging in age from 22 to 38, are being investigated by prosecutors in Munich on suspicion of forming or supporting a criminal organisation. They initiated the investigation after receiving numerous criminal complaints since mid-year 2022.
In an effort to exert pressure on the German government to take more drastic action against climate change. These Climate activists of the Last Generation have repeatedly blocked roads in Germany.
In recent weeks, they have caused nearly daily traffic jams in Berlin by glueing themselves to major intersections and highways. They have also targeted various artworks and exhibitions over the past year.
Their strategy has been harshly criticised. Monday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that he believed it was “completely insane” to stick oneself to a painting or the pavement.
Prosecutors have stated that the individuals under investigation are accused of organising and advocating a campaign to “finance further criminal offences” by the group. As well as raising at least €1.4 million ($1.5 million). Two of them are also suspected of attempting to sabotage a conduit connecting the German city of Ingolstadt to the Italian port of Trieste.
Wednesday’s searches, which were accompanied by orders to seize two bank accounts and other assets. They were conducted to collect evidence regarding the membership structure and funding of Last Generation. No one was arrested.
Last Generation acknowledges that its protests are provocative. But contends that by provoking discord, it can stimulate societal debate regarding climate change.
Wednesday, the group posted on Twitter: “Nationwide raid. #completelynutty.”
It stated, “Searches of lobbying structures and confiscation of government fossil fuel funds — When?”
