Longer lorries roll out on roads, boost in UK Economy

UK economy boosted by £1.4 billion as longer lorries roll out on roads

Longer vehicles will be introduced on UK roads to help the growth of UK economy. Which is now government’s priority by increasing productivity, reducing road emissions, and supporting supply chains.

Legislation will be introduced to allow the vehicles to be safely deployed on the highways beginning on May 31. Longer vehicles may transport fast-moving consumer items and retail merchandise. As well as waste packaging, parcels, and pallets.

These new lorries will transport the same amount of products as present trailers, but will make 8% fewer trips. This is estimated to create £1.4 billion in economic benefits. And remove one standard-size caravan from the road every 12 journeys.

As part of its attempts to boost growth the economy and reduce emissions, the UK government is modifying legislation to allow longer trailers on UK roads, which it says will save 70,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Longer semi-trailers (LST) are trailers that are up to 2.05 metres longer than conventional semi-trailers and can be towed by a lorry.

The move comes after an 11-year trial to ensure LSTs are used safely on roadways. Moreover, the operators will be urged to implement additional safety checks and training. According to the research, LSTs were involved in approximately 61% fewer personal injury collisions than conventional lorries.

According to Richard Holden, Minister for Roads

Everyone in the country relies on our haulage industry for their daily necessities. Which is from toilet paper to sausage rolls. And a strong, resilient supply chain is critical to the government’s aim of economic growth.

These new longer vehicles will make a significant difference for British firms such as Greggs. which will see 15% more baked items delivered, ranging from delectable pastries to the nation’s beloved sausage rolls.

It’s terrific to see this improvement for our supply chain become legislation, which will result in a £1.4 billion boost to the haulage industry and drive economic growth. Let the good times roll as we cut congestion, reduce emissions, and improve road safety in the United Kingdom.
