Union calls for new rail strike in Germany on Friday

The EVG union in Germany called a nationwide transport strike on Friday, affecting national rail operator Deutsche Bahn among others.

The walkout will affect 50 enterprises and will go from 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) to 11 a.m. (0900 GMT). According to the railway and transport union.

It advised commuters to expect delays and cancellations.

High inflation in Europe’s largest economy has triggered a new wave of strikes. As workers want better wages to offset growing living costs.

The Verdi union has also called for a walkout by security control staff at three airports on Thursday and Friday. As a result, Hamburg Airport said on Tuesday that all departures will be cancelled or conducted without passengers, affecting around 80,000 travellers.

The train system was mostly shut down in late March due to a huge rail strike led by EVG and second largest union in Germany, Verdi.

Verdi called for a strike by security personnel at the airports of Duesseldorf, Cologne-Bonn, and Hamburg on Tuesday. The walkout will last through Thursday and Friday.

Negotiations between Verdi and the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) over time bonuses for night shifts, Saturdays, Sundays, and labour on public holidays are the cause of the strikes.

Workers are also seeking for an improved collective agreement on overtime pay for commercial airport security and service personnel.

Despite the recent strikes, no progress has been made. The union emphasised that BDLS’s written offer was insufficient.

“Work at airports must become more appealing in order to retain aviation security specialists and recruit new ones in order to avoid longer wait times for tourists,” Verdi spokesperson Wolfgang Pieper stated.
