The United States, South Korea, and Japan released a joint statement on Friday (Apr 7) expressing deep concern over “malicious” cyber activities of North Korea that support its weapons programs.

Officials and experts from the three countries assert that North Korean hackers have stolen cryptocurrency funds, which have been a critical source of financing for the sanctions-stricken country’s weapons programs.

The statement from US South Korea and Japan reiterates concerns that North Korean IT workers working overseas continue to use forged identities and nationalities to evade United Nations sanctions and raise funds for missile programs.

Additionally, the statement expresses deep concern over how North Korea supports these programs by stealing and laundering funds, as well as gathering information through malicious cyber activities.

Earlier this week, the nuclear envoy of South Korea held talks with his US and Japanese counterparts in Seoul and condemned North Korea’s weapons tests.
