Four people seriously injured in an overnight fire at a hospital in Berlin in Germany. Including a patient who sustained life-threatening injuries. A man was detained in connection with the blaze.

The German capital’s Klinikum am Urban’s third-floor fire put out early on Monday, according to the fire department. A patient whose life was in danger after getting stuck in an elevator. One of three patients and a nurse who suffered serious injuries.

Forty people were evacuated as smoke spread through the building.

Police said the blaze appears to have started when a 48-year-old man set fire to two hospital beds shortly after midnight. He also tried to set a garbage can alight in a foyer. But firefighters prevented him from doing so. The suspect is arrested.

The building’s 40 occupants evacuated as smoke filled it. Although it wasn’t immediately clear how they caught fire, firefighters claimed the blaze appeared to have started with burning beds in a hallway. Police arrested the suspect and arson couldn’t be ruled out.
