The defence ministry and foreign office made a request for an unbudgeted expenditure of 12 billion euros ($13.01 billion) in military aid to Ukraine, which the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved on Wednesday.
Russia is currently at war with Ukraine, and Germany is one of Ukraine’s leading European allies.
The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved an unbudgeted expenditure of 12 billion euros ($13.01 billion) in military aid to Ukraine on Wednesday, in response to a request from the defence ministry and the foreign office. The additional funding approved consists of 3.2 billion euros that the government will disburse in 2023 and credit lines totaling approximately 8.8 billion euros for the period from 2024 to 2032.
Three politicians representing the coalition government on the committee stated in a statement that Ukraine can use the money to directly buy armaments with the support of the German government. They emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary.
Earlier this year, Germany supplied Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine as part of a coalition of countries that provided war ammunition and tanks to the war-hit country.
According to the foreign office, the German government has made more than 14.2 billion euros available in support of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s country since the beginning of the Russian invasion, in financial times.
