BARCELONA (SPAIN) – Health chief of the Catalan region in Spain Alba Verges said FC Barcelona is slated to hold discussions with the regional government on Friday as to whether or not to hold the forthcoming elections. This comes as the curbs have been extended.
The curbs, which prevent people from leaving their municipality except for work, education or medical reasons, have been extended from January 17 until January 24 when the vote is slated to take place.
According to Verges, regional officials will explain the existing situation and projections on the evolution of the virus to the club, adding that Barca have to take the final decision.
Leading presidential candidate Joan Laporta has sought the exemption for members to go out and vote in the Barca vote, which he said is essential for the club to rope in new players and find ways to address its financial woes.
Ever since Josep Maria Bartomeu stepped down as president in October last year, the club have been in the hands of a management committee with limited powers.
In the election, around 110,000 club members can exercise their franchise with 10 polling booths set up across the region and other parts of Spain.
