Police to crack whip on those violating COVID rules

LONDON (UK) – Minister responsible for policing Kit Malthouse said on Tuesday that police will crack the whip on those who break rules meant to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus and stricter measures could be implemented.

A new highly infectious strain of the coronavirus has hit the nation and the government is pulling out all stops to halt the spread of the pandemic. In parts of London, one in 20 people is infected.

London police chief Cressida Dick, the senior-most officer in the country, said officers would take stricter action to enforce lockdown norms amid concern that some people were ignoring steps to limit social mixing.

“It is preposterous to me that anyone could be unaware of our duty to do all we can to stop the spread of the virus,” Dick wrote in the Times. “We have been clear that those who breach Covid-19 legislation are increasingly likely to face fines.”

Malthouse said the government could consider bringing in even stricter norms if the numbers relating to infections and hospitalisations revealed action was necessary.
