China backs Hong Kong authorities’ fulfilment of duties: Foreign Ministry

BEIJING (CHINA) – China said on Wednesday it fully backs Hong Kong authorities when it comes to fulfilling their obligations after city police arrested 53 activists in one swoop.

During a press briefing, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Hong Kong residents’ rights and freedoms according to the law are not affected by the police action.

On Wednesday dawn, police conducted raids on 72 premises and arrested 53 pro-democracy activists for their links to last year’s vote to select opposition candidates for the legislative polls. Raids were undertaken by 1,000 policemen, the largest crackdown so far since the new national security legislation was imposed on the city by Beijing.
