Locusts wreak havoc on farms outside Somalian capital

MOGADISHU (SOMALIA) – Armed with a rifle, Mohamed Yasin tries to chase away a plague of locusts that have descended on his farm. But his efforts are in vain.

At the farm, which is located on the outskirts of Mogadishu, the insects are eating away his livelihood, devastating stalks of corn and beans as well as his grass meant for camels.

“We have asked the government to help us on how we will fight the locusts as they are turning everywhere into a desert,” Yasin said.

The once-in-a-generation phenomenon of locust attacks has been frequent since 2019 because of the unusual weather patterns.
