New Zealand’s Ardern relaxes coronavirus restrictions in Auckland

WELLINGTON (NEW ZEALAND) – Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday that coronavirus restrictions in New Zealand’s largest city will be lifted this week. She was positive about the fear of a second wave of COVID-19 infections in Auckland being almost eliminated.

The city will move to alert level 1 from 11.59 pm on Wednesday, as it has not reported any new cases in the Auckland cluster for 10 consecutive days.

Ardern said, “There is now a 95% probability of the cluster being eliminated. COVID-19 will be with us for many months to come. But we should still mark these milestones.”

The Auckland outbreak, detected in August, was the worst the country had witnessed with 179 linked cases, which pushed Ardern to reinforce restrictions in Auckland.
