Daily new infections show sharp spike in England: ONS survey

LONDON (UK) – In the week to September 19, the number of coronavirus cases in England spiked by 73%, according to an official count. This points to the resurgence of the pandemic in the country.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has brought back some curbs to stem the spread of the second wave of infections ahead of winter.

Government data said that on Thursday, the country recorded its highest number of daily new infections at 6,634.

The Office for National Statistics said that the modelled estimate, which is based on samples of the population, shows that new infections in England shot up to around 9,600 per day in the week to Sept. 19, up from around 6,000 per day the previous week.

During that week, as many as 103,600 people in England had the infection, which is equivalent to 1 in 500.

“The estimate shows that the incidence rate for England has increased in recent weeks,” the ONS said, adding that infections are rising in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, London and North East.

London Councils, which represents the 32 boroughs, and the City of London said that the capital has been included to a national coronavirus watchlist.
