PM rules out second lockdown, says new curbs possible to halt spread of COVID-19

LONDON (UK) – Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the country was facing an inevitable second wave of coronavirus pandemic, adding that new curbs may be required but not another lockdown.

There were reports that ministers were mulling another national lockdown on Friday after infections almost doubled to 6,000 per day and hospital admissions soared across northern England and London.

Johnson said the rise in cases was part of an unstoppable second wave of infections. “We are now seeing a second wave coming in…It is absolutely, I’m afraid, inevitable, that we will see it in this country,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of a lockdown, he said, “I don’t want to get into a second national lockdown at all.”

But he hinted that new restrictions would be put in place.

“When you look at what is happening, you’ve got to wonder whether we need to go further than the rule of six that we brought in on Monday,” he said, referring to the ban on gatherings of more than six people.
