WASHINGTON (US) – Amazon.com Inc on Monday said it is recruiting 100,000 more workers, and this is the fourth hiring announcement it has made for the United States this year.
It said the positions are offered for full and part-time work in US and Canada. This includes roles at 100 new warehouse and operations sites that would be opened this month. The company based in Seattle employed 876,800 people as of June 30, excluding contractors and temporary personnel.
The news is a reflection of Amazon’s constant requirement for labour to pick, pack and ship products to make it reach the shoppers. The last quarter saw an increase in 40% revenue last quarter and eventually the biggest profit in its 26-year-history. Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment, said that it is planning to introduce automatic equipments at its newest buildings at the same time.
Boler Davis said, “We will continue to deploy technology where appropriate, starting from a safety perspective” and “where we can improve our overall operation.”
When asked whether automation would mean fewer jobs per warehouse, she did not comment but said Amazon efficiently makes use of its systems for collaboration with people. “We don’t look at it as an ‘either/or.'”
Boler Davis said the company is still assessing seasonal employment needs for the winter holiday, besides the 100,000 positions it is filling.
Earlier this month Amazon had declared 33,000 openings for corporate and technology workers. It also announced 100,000 and 75,000 new operations jobs in March and April, respectively, so as to help people who were laid off by other ventures during the pandemic.
