Tokyo 2020 director leaves, with only few months for rearranged Games

TOKYO (JAPAN) – The organising committee said Tokyo 2020 Sports Director Koji Murofushi has called it quits to join the Japan Sports Agency, on Friday. This stepping down has happened just 10 months before the beginning of the rearranged Games.

The former Olympic gold medallist hammer thrower was one of the key personalities to be part of the organising committee.

Murofushi had been actively involved with the committee since 2014. He has helped chart out schedules for events for both the Olympics and Paralympics, which were delayed by a year because of the pandemic.

He will assume the position of commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency, an organisation with an objective to promote sport nationwide.

Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori in a statement said, “I know that Mr. Murofushi will prove a dependable partner at the helm of Japanese sports administration as we work together toward the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games.”
