CALIFORNIA (US) – Facebook Inc took legal action on Friday against Ireland’s Data Protection Commission in order to suspend a proposed order that could prevent the company from data transfer from the European Union to the United States.
A company representative said in a statement the US social media giant asked regulators “to adopt a pragmatic and proportionate approach until a sustainable long-term solution can be reached”.
The Irish commission, Facebook’s lead regulator in the EU, had started an inquiry into the EU-US data transfers controlled by the company.
Facebook said on Wednesday that the company’s way of handling transatlantic data transfers cannot be used for EU-US data transfers as well.
Facebook had said that the mechanism, Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs), had been deemed valid by the Court of Justice of the European Union in July.
The Irish regulator, however, declined to comment.
