Myanmar leader Suu Kyi cancels campaign trip after coronavirus cases surge

YANGON (MYANMAR) – Myanmar state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said on Monday she would not participate in the election campaign, citing the pandemic which is spreading fast in the country.

The country reported as many as 100 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the biggest spike in daily increase since the outbreak started in March. On Monday, 45 more cases were detected.

Suu Kyi was all set to tour the constituency where she is contesting in the commercial capital of Yangon on Tuesday. It is the start of the campaigning ahead of elections on Nov. 8.

In a Facebook post, she said the trip was cancelled following an advice from the health minister.

“At the moment the ministry of health is the most powerful. We must follow the instructions of the ministry,” she said.
