Wisconsin shooting: Protest marches become violent, one shot dead

KENOSHA (US) – Street protests in Kenosha following the police shooting of a Black man erupted into gun violence late on Tuesday and early Wednesday, leaving one dead and two injured, said the county sheriff.

Videos on social media showed people screaming and close-up shots of gunshot wounds after a night of violence. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

Protesters chased a gun wielding man down the street, believing he had shot another person. One of the persons kicked him after he fell to the ground while another tried to wrest the rifle from him. He appeared to be shot at close range and fell to the ground.

Videos showed two of the injured being given first aid by others.

Protests have rocked Kenosha since Sunday when police shot Jacob Blake in the back as he walked away from two cops and opened the door of his vehicle. The video went viral.

The 29-year-old was hit by four of the seven shots fired and he has been left paralysed fighting for life, said his family and lawyers on Tuesday.

The protests in Kenosha have brought on the streets self-styled militia carrying rifles. Mostly whites, these vigilante groups have weapons slung over their shoulders and are standing guard outside businesses to protect them from arsonists and looters.
