SHANGHAI/SEOUL (CHINA/SOUTH KOREA) – The US sanctions on Huawei are likely to block the firm’s access to even off-the-shelf chips. In such a scenario, it is likely to lose its title as the world’s largest smartphone maker and disrupt global tech supply.
On Monday, the US expanded the curbs on Huawei and banned suppliers from selling chips made using the technology of American firms to the company without a special licence. This comes in a bid to plug the loopholes in the May sanctions that could have allowed Huawei to gain access to technology using third parties.
The fresh curbs will further strain the frayed Sino-US ties as Washington wants other nations to squeeze Huawei out, alleging the firm would hand over user data to Beijing for espionage, a charge which the firm denies.
The telecoms manufacturer’s business took a hit last year when the US blacklisted it.
