FORT BREGANCON (FRANCE) – French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that world powers are duty-bound to support Lebanon after a massive explosion ripped through the capital, adding that the future of the country is at stake. He was addressing an emergency donors conference.
Though the country’s economy crippled by debt is reeling from a crisis, world leaders are wary of giving blank cheques to a government which the Lebanese perceive as corrupt to the core.
Macron said the aid should be coordinated by the UN.
“Our task today is to act swiftly and efficiently, to coordinate our aid on the ground so that this aid goes as quickly as possible to the Lebanese people,” Macron said via video-link.
He said the offer for help includes an impartial and credible probe into the blast which happened on August 4.
