Czech Republic records biggest hike in coronavirus infections

PRAGUE (CZECH REPUBLIC) – Since the end of June, the Czech Republic recorded its biggest spurt in the number of coronavirus infections on Wednesday.

The country recorded as many as 290 new cases on Tuesday, said the Health Ministry. The total number of infections stands at 17,286. Of those, 11,812 have recovered and 383 succumbed to the virus.

A quarter of the new cases numbering 77 are from Moravia-Silesia on the Polish border, where there was a recent outbreak among miners.

The total number of active cases is 5,091. Pointing to the low number of hospitalisations, which stands at 123, some epidemiologists suggest that the virus must have weakened.

Since May 20, the number of fatalities has been below five.

Health ministry officials said that some curbs are likely to be reintroduced after the summer holidays when cities become crowded and the flu season arrives.

Prague chief public health officer Zdenka Jagrova said that residents of the capital might be required to wear face coverings at some point inside public spaces such as shopping malls and on public transport.
