YANGON (MYANMAR) – Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday formally declared her intention seeking for a second term in the November election.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s international reputation came down over the way Myanmar handled Rohingya Muslims. However, she remains popular at home.
On Tuesday, Suu Kyi, 75, was on her way to submit an application to run as a candidate.
In January, Suu Kyi agreed upon war crimes being committed against Rohingya, however, she denied genocide, saying the extent of abuses on refugees has been blown out of proportion.
A report has been filed on its adhering to measures to protect Rohingya, but no details of the document have been published.
The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), dominated by the military and retired civil servants, will be the National League for Democracy’s main opponent.
