New Genoa bridge comes up as sign of a ‘rising Italy’

MILAN (ITALY) – In sharp contrast to the stalled infrastructure projects elsewhere in Italy, a new bridge has come up in place of Genoa’s Morandi motorway bridge which collapsed two years ago, killing 43 people.

Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the new bridge replaces the old span that broke apart on Aug. 14, 2018 which was one of the country’s worst man-made disasters in decades.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who is slated to take part in the inauguration of the new bridge on Monday, said that the structure symbolised a new Italy rising up. It will be thrown open to road traffic later this week.

Its architect told the Corriere della Sera that he envisioned the bridge and its elliptical 40-metre high pillars as a ship to catch the Mediterranean light in a way that befits the character of the port city.
